Sessue Hayakawa was born as Kintarō Hayakawa on June 10, 1889, in Minamibōsō, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

He was born into a prominent and affluent family, which afforded him a good education. His father was a chief of a county police station. Hayakawa was originally intended to join the Japanese naval academy and pursue a career in the Japanese Imperial Navy, but a ruptured eardrum at age 17 prevented him from doing so.
