Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania, 38, the reigning women's Olympic marathon champion, won the 2004 Chicago Marathon in 2:23:45 and set a personal best and a Romanian record of 2:21:30 with a second-place finish in Chicago in 2005.

She was also second in London in 2005 in 2:22:50 and third in 2007 in 2:23:55. Tomescu-Dita was the bronze medalist at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki in 2:23:19. She won the 2005 World Half-Marathon Championships in 1:09:17 (her half-marathon best is 1:08:10).
